thirsty & miserable present: 40 years BIRTHDAY PARTY czech PUNK legends (curated by MadameMacario)

UŽ JSME DOMA { pronounce «oosh∼smeh∼dough∼ma» } is a group originally founded in 1985 at Teplice (czech republic)  with some flesh & brain pieces of F.P.B.

• Hard to resume soon 40 arghtivism years : Nine studio albums, two re∼recorded & re∼arranged studio recordings, three live albums { last & new one starring Randy of The Residents }, two DVDs, one lyrical book, one pop∼up book & around 3000 shows around the earth… The band’s approach to arrangements & style is unique in the world of «rock». They bring instruments & vocals in different directions within the same scales and keys to create a dense melodic atmosphere. In addition, their rhythms often accent off∼beats and half∼beats, throwing the listener into unexpected directions. The music seems to be an exhausting juxtaposition between beauty and ugliness, as songs will frequently shift between modes to create tumultuous, powerful hooks. The combo is also fond of shifts between time signatures and the insertion of extra beats in the shaping of the mood of the song…

• The lyrics of Miroslav Wanek are considered as deep sweet crazy poetry. And all artworks are well∼done by permanent non∼musician member, painter Martin Velíšek. Without any doubt : «We are well in their home» !

F.P.B. { short for Fourth Price Band } was one of the most influencial precursor band, from czech «punk» movement, formed in 1980 at Teplice —town bordering germany— by bassist, singer and poet Miroslav Wanek & his friend Petr Růžička, who improvised sort of «manager». These two amigos  were soon joined by drummer Milan Nový and, later, by guitarist Romek Hanzlík. This line∼up scoured nearly 40 concerts { including a unique & epic date at the polish Jarocin festival } until 1985, when Mirek & Romek joined and truly launched the stammering collective Už Jsme Doma
In 1986, the «manager» tried to reboot (under the same name) with a new members around the original drummer, who broke up in 1987…

• Since 2008, Wanek & Hanzlík  let Už Jsme Doma play 21 songs from F.P.B. repertoire during exceptional, fusional passionate concerts…

I first encountered the Gotobeds in August 2014, at a benefit for the great rock bard Karl Hendricks in their mutual hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Gotobeds went on fashionably (if not voluntarily) late and proceeded to lay waste to anything else anyone tried to do that evening.

I took an abnormal number of photos and was made a fan for life.

This kind of instant affection happens to me, particularly in my jaded dotage, so very rarely that I feel it is worth noting.

Almost inevitably, an attempt to describe an unnameable jolt will devolve into predictable cliches.

I'm talking about old chestnuts like:

            Bouncing off the walls

Spending about half an hour in a washing machine full of bolts and rose petals

Having sand thrown in your eyes just before being kissed vigorously on the neck

All of which are a) barely better than nothing on the word front but b) do apply, if lazily so, to the Gotobeds’ various, terrific issuances: on 12XU (to which they have happily returned), their erstwhile label Sub Pop, etc. And the latter two apply perhaps most especially to their terrific new record–Masterclass.

The Gotobeds have an unwavering commitment to bending and breaking things in the process of remaking them into something bolder and better (and, a couple of lineup changes to the contrary, not laying anyone off wantonly from critical government jobs). "Goes Away," to wit, is remarkably fractured, chomping up the minutes, 0% rounded off as is their default setting--do not toy with perfection.

The Gotobeds are aggressive, cannily disjointed, occasionally raw propellent, with an ear for melody that leavens the entire enterprise with a reasonable, non-diabetes-inducing amount of sugar. The lovely-yet-scaly "Mirror Writing" is nearly six minutes long and somehow too short. "Second Sight" doesn't pass for mellow but has guitar lines in the chorus that I'm pretty sure were written by Richard Carpenter on PCP (please fact-check).

All of the guitar playing that comes out of this band is 100% whacked (a wildly positive modifier, not to be confused with its opposite of "wack")...oh what can I say to pique your interest, that you might understand through reference.

Hmmm...how about...Rowland S Howard riding on the shoulders of Lee Ranaldo through a house of mirrors. Hack move on my part. But perhaps it leaves the right taste in your mouth.

The complements to this wrangling and strangling are warm and charming vocals (albeit semi-buried), with perhaps surprising heart and richness to them, plus (crucially) an insistent, melodic bass guitar and beguilingly slushy drumming that together invite that most welcome and rare of rock sense-memory tingles (The Clean).

In closing, I will suggest:

Apprise your ears, brain, and genitalia of this brazen, scabrous, lovingly made record–the Gotobeds’ fourth or fifth depending on how many fingers you have left on your counting hand.

Masterclass was spat out during a low point of recent human history–the Great Plague of 2020-2022–but as we should all know from watching the History Channel, there’s always a sub-sub-basement. And beautiful art, great music, good books–these things are necessary for survival, as well as being prime antidotes to the scourge of psyops-enabled doomscrolling.

If you've access to a better (or even marginally equivalent) ball of punk, surf, no-wave, Beat-adjacent literature (ala John Fante, namechecked herein) and bubblegum, a) I have serious doubts that you are telling the truth, but b) please let us all know because we can surely use it.

low key orchestra.

Maybe words can help you / Maybe lines that care
I can sense your trouble / And I feel you there

M:Soundtrack Birthday Party with Feminist Jazz, Cinematic Funk & Sonic Resistance

On November 8 ·  M:Soundtrack x Little League Shows prst: Seoi Nage (cinematic kraut funk, mmbrs of Messer) +  So Sorry (indie-jazz, bln)  +   DJ TBA

On the occasion of M:Soundtrack’s birthday, curator and cultural connector Melissa Perales joins forces with Little League Shows to celebrate live music that pulses with soul, resistance, and narrative power.

This special edition features two genre-blurring bands that reflect Melissa’s long-standing commitment to soundtracks, feminism, and radical community-building:

So Sorry So Sorry is not an apology—but a feminist call to arms. A Berlin-based FLINTA* band blending indie, jazz, and groove, their concept of caring music flips genre expectations and demands space in the male-dominated jazz, funk, and fusion scenes. Their performances are warm, radical, and rhythmically bold—songs that sing, dance, and fight for queerness, empowerment, and joy.

If you think femininely socialized musicians only write ballads—you're invited to be joyfully proven wrong.

Seoi Nage – Cinematic kraut-funk from Münster.
Named after a classic judo throw and formed by musicians with martial arts backgrounds, Seoi Nage is an instrumental four-piece—delivering a genre-hopping tour de force. Think: martial arts cinema meets Italian giallo, sleazy car chases, and psychedelic noir. Their debut feels like the soundtrack to a cult film that never existed—full of swagger, funk, and suspense.

* Expect a night of narrative beats, sonic storytelling, and music as action. Curated by Melissa Perales, whose work sits at the intersection of cinema, sound, and social impact, and co-presented with Little League Shows—champions of Berlin’s underground.

The queer vegan shitpunks, Joe & The Shitboys, formed with the intention of calling out shitty behaviour in the conservative Faroe Islands, where the rock scene is filled with boneless homophobes and meat-eating misogynists - and continue to take their aim at general vibe killers everywhere.

The live shows are full of energy, with a barrage of songs often under a minute long, like “Save The Planet You Dumb Shit”, "Life Is Great You Suck" and “If You Believe in Eating Meat Start With Your Dog”, being broken up by the flamboyant frontman roasting the audience relentlessly.  The band (Joe, Ziggy Shit, Johnny Shit and Ollie Shit) have played every type of venue there is; roof tops, public toilets, opening ceremonies for North Atlantic sub sea tunnels, museums and skateparks, and have also appeared on their fair share of major festival line ups around Europe and North America.
