Ekowmania & the Rhythmers fuse Ghanaian highlife with reggae, jazz, funk, soukous, salsa, and afrobeat to create an infectious, genre-crossing sound rooted in rhythm and resistance. Led by master drummer and vocalist Ekow Alabi Savage—whose legacy includes work with Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, and Ziggy Marley—the Berlin-based group features fellow Ghanaian veterans Frank Karikari and the late Kwame Gbemu ‘Sometimer’ (1950–2025), alongside Thomas Akoto, French-American guitarist Nick Morrison, and Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Mauricio Fleury. Their debut EP (out May 2025) blends party energy with social commentary, from the high-octane Hedzoleh tribute “Rekpete” to the rootsy protest groove “Ananse” and the Afro-funk anthem “Rasta Fo.”

Calamidades Lola is a record hunter and dj/selector born and raised in Barranquilla, a city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia with a powerful culture of celebration and where music is a sure path to joy and liberation. She grew up surrounded by massive and colorful ‘picó’ sound systems that made the whole barrio vibrate with African and Caribbean rhythms. The members of the band have been active in the local Berlin music scene for over two decades already, and bring a lot of experience in D.I.Y.Underground concerts. LazyCat meets ChicxDrama for a set that will melt your heart and put it back together in a few songs. These two transgender kitties now based in Berlin crossed paths in 2023, all the way from Roma and Bogotá, and started to spread their music together around as solo artists. After wishing it for so long, this will be their debut as a duo. They sing about pain and healing, anti specism, anti imperialism, anti racism, about daily struggles as migrants, as genderqueer people, with bodies and minds disabled by the cistem. The bass as the roots of a tree, acoustic and electrics guitars as the birds nesting on them, the voices as wings, if you want to picture their sound.

FLINTA* IM KIEZ is a monthly concert series organized by MY PEOPLE BOOKING in Berlin, aimed at providing a platform for underrepresented musicians in the city’s alternative rock and punk scenes. The series specifically focuses on FLINTA* (women*, lesbians, inter people, non-binary people, trans people, and agender people) artists who often face challenges in spaces dominated by cisgender male musicians. By offering a stage to these artists, the project works to disrupt the dominance of privileged voices in the alternative music scene and ensure that diverse perspectives are given visibility.
The concert series will take place across Berlin, ensuring that it reaches different communities and supports the city's rich underground music culture. The initiative also responds to the struggles faced by small venues, which have been hit by rising costs and economic downturns. By highlighting local talent and providing a space for FLINTA* musicians, the concert series creates an important cultural environment that nurtures new artists and fosters community support.
Additionally, FLINTA* IM KIEZ will implement sliding scale pricing for tickets, making these events more accessible to a wider range of people, particularly those from marginalized communities such as FLINTA*, BIPoC, and individuals with migration experiences. This approach ensures that everyone, regardless of income, has the opportunity to experience and enjoy underground music. With a focus on diversity and inclusion, the series strives to build a more equitable cultural landscape for both artists and audiences.

It's been over six years since we've last heard from this Bloomington, Indiana group which by now must be considered a highly influential force on the current garage-, synth- and eggpunk scene while in the meantime, members of the group have pumped their creative juices into acts like Belly Jelly, QQQL, Dummy and Big Hog. Now that they finally break the deafening silence, i gotta say this shit works better than ever in what must be the strongest set of tunes they've delivered so far. Just a tiny bit less weird and cluttered than on their previous efforts with more grounded, catchy and melodic song foundations and echoes of the likes of Tyvek, Marked Men and Lost Sounds, this is a strikingly mature work with all the hallmarks of a band that took a long break to branch out creatively in other projects, now reconvening to apply everything they've learned along the way with sleepwalking precision to an effortlessly wrecking result.

Mary Anibal, only 25 years old, is the new shooting star in Zimbabwe. After several years of experience as the backing singer of Jah Prayzah, Zimbabwe's most successful musician, including internationally, she started her solo career in 2023, where she won the Zimbabwe Grammy for best newcomer that same year.
Mary Anibal is not only a powerful vocalist, but also a gifted mbira player, breathing new life into one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic traditional instruments. Rooted in Shona spiritual and musical heritage, the mbira is often called the "voice of the ancestors"—and in Mary’s hands, it becomes a tool for both healing and transformation. Her playing bridges generations, blending the trance-like, cyclical melodies of ancestral mbira music with contemporary Afro-fusion elements.
Mary uses the mbira not just as accompaniment, but as a central voice in her compositions, creating hypnotic soundscapes that speak directly to the soul. In doing so, she honors Zimbabwean tradition while fearlessly carving out a path of her own. Her unique combination of modern songwriting and deep respect for cultural heritage has made her a standout artist, both at home and on the global stage.
Mary, who also advocates for women's rights, has been celebrated in Zimbabwe ever since and has also been able to prove her talent on international stages, e.g. in Canada, Zanzibar or the Ivory Coast. After releasing her first album at the end of last year, she will come to Germany and Switzerland for a multi-week tour for the first time this summer.

Nachdem sie mehrere Jahre Erfahrung als Begleitsängerin von Jah Prayzah, dem erfolgreichsten Musiker Simbabwes auch international gesammelt hat, startete sie 2023 ihre Solokarriere, wo sie noch im gleichen Jahr den Simbabwe-Grammy als beste Nachwuchskünstlerin gewonnen hat. Robert Machiri aka CHI - He is a sound artist and hoarder of sound-related objects. Machiri’s work exists at the juncture of two streams of practice; curatorial concepts founded through the notion of conviviality and art as pedagogy. He is a DJ and hoarder of things, inspired by his music collection and interest in sound-related objects. His work exists at the interface of two streams of practice; his curatorial concepts and a multidisciplinary production of artworks that draw on decolonial discourses that are presented through embodied critique, learning and unlearning, interweaving sound, music and image-making. His most notable project, PUNGWE, is an interdisciplinary project circling African soundings with related contemporary arts discourses and spaces.
YETIN (alt. rock / Berlin)
Yetin is a 5-piece alternative rock band that was formed in Berlin in 2021. The band's early days were spent experimenting with different sounds and styles, without a clear vision of which direction the project was heading, ultimately finding a common ground in haunting melodies and alternative song structures.
PIVNOY COWBOY (post-punk / Berlin)
Pivnoy Cowboy is a Berlin-based solo project of multi-instrumentalist Vitalii Zimin – a founder of Crunch Tapes Records. Debut LP 'Impossibilism' was released via Dutch label Geertruida in 2020. Live band line-up varies from one to four people on stage. Pivnoy Cowboy's music is a mix of sampled lo-fi drum beats, analog vintage synths, dreamy guitars, strong fuzzy bass lines and out-of-body goth vocals. It's like an unknown substance trip, the effect of which is difficult to compare with previous experiences. The show at Schokoladen will be a full band performance.
Chelsea were formed in 1976 by front man Gene October. Spearheading the punk movement, their debut single ‘Right To Work’ was released in 1977 which brought the attention of the music press. Gene October was responsible for starting The Roxy Club in Soho where many of the early punk bands started playing and Chelsea began playing alongside the likes of The Clash, The Damned, The Police, Sham 69. Featuring in Derrek Jarman’s punk film ‘Jubilee’ Chelsea also featured on 2 John Peel sessions and the Old Grey Whistle Test at the BBC promoting their self titled first album. After a succession of singles and release of a 2nd album Chelsea toured the U.K & America releasing their 3rd album ‘Evacuate’ in 1980. The Evacuate album saw them touring again in the U.S and in the U.K with Anti Nowhere League on the infamous ‘So What’ tour. Through various line-up changes over 4 decades, October continued to tour with Chelsea releasing 17 singles and 12 studio albums to date. Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2016 many of the Chelsea albums have been re-issued on collectors limited colored vinyl. The release of Chelsea’s complete recordings feature in the new anthology box sets 1 – 3 which include demos, previously unheard tracks, a historical biography through the albums, pictures and lyrics to all the songs. In 2023 Chelsea was celebrating 40 years of „Evacuate“, the classic album of the band. The latest release is the album „Meanwhile Garden“, published in spring 2021

Polish band performing music from the borderline of techno, dub, hip-hop and electronics. Erfolg ist das deutschsprachige Solo-Projekt von Johannes von Weizsäcker, den einige vielleicht als Mitglied der „leicht experimentellen“ London-Berliner Popgruppe The Chap kennen. Da er zeit seines Lebens Angst davor hatte, Musik mit deutschen Texten zu schreiben, andererseits aber inzwischen ein Alter erreicht hat, in dem man sich gewissen Ängsten stellen muss, zwang er sich zu diesem Projekt. Und hatte prompt Erfolg! Denn dabei sind ebenso erbauliche wie melancholische Pop-Miniaturen entstanden, die von Griechenlandhilfe, Kochsendungen, dem fragmentierten Subjekt und natürlich von Erfolg handeln.

Lemongrab: Since DIY duo Gaëlle & Léonie’s move to Berlin in 2019 - the band formed a new configuration which has made a quick yet lasting impression in the Berlin and wider European punk scene. Renowned for their raw and cathartic live shows and heavy but playful songwriting. Their influences range from the Stooges to Wire, detouring at Pylon’s weirdo hooks and resurfacing on a familiar Bikini Kill-esque territory.

NinaMarie sollte fortan das Wunschkind heissen, das aus dem Seitensprung der beiden Musiker entstand.

Ehrlich, direkt, unmittelbar zeigt sich auch der Song „Da haben wir den Salat“. Immer wieder hätten sich Kinder bei ihren Konzerten ein Lied über Tiere gewünscht. Entstanden ist nun ein veganer Song über das Tiere-(Nicht)essen, der Tierrechte und die Wichtigkeit von Tierwohl altersgerecht vermittelt.

BSÍ is made up of best friends Silla Thorarensen and Julius Pollux Rothlaender. They use their voice, they play drums, bass guitar, and some keyboards with their toes. “riot grrrl lofi-cute-punk” is what someone said.
BSÍ is named after Reykjavík's central bus terminal, honouring the most miserable location you can find in all of Iceland. Silla and Julius try to not take themselves too seriously, unafraid to embrace their self-doubts and just do and be what- or however they feel.

13YC aka 13 Year Cicada are 3 friends who all play samplers plus instruments. Philip plays drums plus sampler, Hotti plays bass plus sampler, Zooey plays keys/sings plus sampler. Their journey as a band reaches back seven years, and their jelling as human and musical collaborators promises many more to come.
All three musicians have a background in jazz which they managed to escape quite early on in their careers - not because they lack the love for the genre but because becoming a part of a less elitist and more diy scene seemed important (ok, also sometimes moshpits are just more fun than chairs). In 2017, with their first album 'Totem Tongue' they found a beautiful home in Gandula records (Barcelona), proud to share a roster with bands as great as ZA!. They followed up with their second album '00YES' in 2019 and released a single in collaboration with Berlin underground label tomatenplatten ('Fourtrack Mind Vol. 3') in 2021. Throughout these years they got massive help in touring possibilities from both Gandula and tomatenplatten and also the wonderful
family of Blaublau Records from Bern/Zurich. 13YC have so far toured Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Croatia, Italy, Czech Republic, France and have some beautiful tour plans for 2022 lined up.
13YC are constantly on the quest to minimize power dynamics, starting with their own way of working. If people could get rid of the divine right of kings, just think what we could do 13 years from now?
'haha gravity' is their third studio album, released in a triangle collaboration between Gandula, tomatenplatten and Blaublau Records.

With Jamaican jazz and solid reggae grooves, Wood In Di Fire make the dancehall go wild during their live sessions. What began as a jam project by musicians from various Berlin bands has developed into a permanent formation. But the session idea is still alive: The band members and guests bring a wide variety of influences from reggae, jazz, ska, Latin and Afro-Beat and thus always provide surprising kicks. On numerous tours through Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Hungary and Switzerland, Wood In Di Fire thrilled their audience with their extraordinary, intercontinental, musical fusion on driving reggae beats and jazzy grooves. Since the project started in 2000, Wood In Di Fire has traditionally played in Berlin's "Schokoladen". The reggae jam, which still takes place monthly today, quickly went from being an insider tip to an established date for the Berlin reggae scene.
JazzBo – living jamaica jazz ska from berlin, with reggae and ska classics, own compositions and cool jazz interpretations. JazzBo is a traditional combo quintet, relying solely on acoustic instruments. JazzBo was founded in 1997 by Detwin Johannsen and Waki Johannsen, together with Daniel Dueckers.
Detwin (alt & tenor sax) and Waki (trombone), the Johannsen brothers, founded already the forerunner of JazzBo, YEBO. This was in 1979, therefore YEBO was one of the first traditional ska bands outside Jamaica. Besides, and even since the early sixties, the Johannsen bros. played extensively New Orleans jazz. Against this background the Johannsen bros. were key for developing the unique sound of JazzBo: rough and pure.
Daniel Dueckers (piano) played in several other bands with local cult status, like ENGINE 54, TIME TOUGH, LIONS CLUB, and RAGGATACKE. Together with Waki he is still a member of YEBO and THE SPARTAN ALLSTARS - in the latter accompanied by Robert:
Robert Schwill (drums) joined the band shortly afterwards. Robert came from TIME TOUGH and THE SKAMPIES and had toured with MOTHER’S PRIDE. Robert’s R&B-offbeat and drive is influenced by Lloyd Knibbs.
Martin Bartels (double bass) was, and still is, a member of WOOD IN DI FIRE, one of the most thrilling rock steady bands in Germany with many tours though Europe. Martin’s walking bass represents the tradition of American R&B and Jamaican beat.

Lollise is a musician, visual artist and fashion designer from Botswana, currently living in NYC.
Using sound, color and movement, Lollise tells stories of real and imagined worlds,
multidimensional and nuanced, historical and futuristic. She performs with a potent energy and
commitment to the music, in body and in spirit. Lollise creates hybrid songs for this moment,
taking influence from the music she grew up with – Setswana and Kalanga folk songs, '80s and
'90s South African electronic bubblegum and kwaito, Congolese soukous and Zimbabwean
sungura – and the music she has been exposed to in New York, including Afrobeat, new wave,
and art-pop.
Adelle Nqeto's music stems from the gaze of an introverted observer with a passion for melody and stories. Rooted in South African folk and exploring Jazz, Indie and Pop sensibilities, the Berlin-based musician’s work expresses the beauty and complexity in our human reality. Quite fittingly, her music style has been labelled as “Alternative African Folk”.

Berlin-based singer and electronic artist ZYLVA channels themes of hope and recovery on her EP "Antiroom." After the feat of strength that was the release of her debut album "Poems from the Dark" in 2023, Zylva longed for musical and personal companionship, something she found again in Ludwig Wandinger, a fellow Berlin resident who co-produced the EP. In keeping with the heterogeneous approach of her debut, with genres ranging from Avant Pop to Indie and Ambient over the course of 5 tracks, "Antiroom" reflects the breadth of Zylva’s musical spectrum. The title’s double meaning ("Antiroom/Anteroom") refers to spaces where one’s presence (e.g., as a female producer) is not intended, as well as the EP being a precursor to future musings and a harbinger of recovery.
Gob is a legendary Canadian punk band from Vancouver, British Columbia, known for their
infectious, hook-laden sound and relentless DIY ethic. As they approach their 30th anniversary, Gob’s
influence on the punk scene remains undeniable. The band first gained prominence in 1995 with their hit
“Soda” from the album Too Late… No Friends, which became a youth anthem in Canada, thanks in part to its
iconic music video which received heavy rotation on Canada’s Muchmusic.
Over the years, Gob has released six full-length albums, sold over 300,000 physical copies, and earned
Juno nominations and Gold record certifications. Their singles “I Hear You Calling” and “Give Up the Grudge”
further solidified their place in punk rock history. Known for their energetic live shows, Gob has performed
worldwide, including major festivals like Warped Tour, Edgefest, and Amnesia Rockfest. They are one of the
rare punk bands to have had the honor of gracing the stage at Budokan in Japan.

A staple of the Toronto scene for over a decade, The Anti-Queens are an ultra-hard-working, punked-up rock 'n' roll quartet. They've become infamous in their hometown of Toronto for their insanely high-energy, take-no-prisoners live performances.

After a year of downtime and writing, MICHAEL BEACH emerged in late 2024 with 'The Sea,' the first release from his upcoming LP on Goner/Poison City Records, and first of his recent collaborations mixing pulsing minimalism with post-punk/DIY approaches with Mick Turner (Dirty Three) and Joe Talia (Oren Ambarchi, Ned Collette). A new 7" via Minneapolis label 25 Diamonds coincided with his recent US tour with Tropical Fuck Storm.
Known for his previous collaborations with members of Dirty Three, Tropical Fuck Storm, Comets On Fire, and brilliantly eccentric guitarist Charlie Megira, Beach is the architect of a sound that is both well-built and ramshackle, straightforward and indeterminably complex, out of the norm yet familiar in all the best ways.
Beach’s 2022 EP (Goner) saw him mix blown out rock and roll with his unique style of balladry, including collaborations with Lloyd Swanton on legendary Australian minimalists The Necks. His 2021 fourth full-length, Dream Violence (Goner) is an epic album that explores the duality of the human condition. Or, as Beach himself puts it, the album is about “human futility, passion, desire, anger, frustration, and the struggle to maintain hope in a somewhat hopeless time.”
Dream Violence unfolds like a revelation, filled with sonic tumbleweeds that reference Neil Young’s On the Beach, Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, the Velvet Underground’s Loaded, and the Go Betweens’ Before Hollywood. Influences ranging from the enigmatic outlier Megira to Glenn Branca to the Oblivians are combined to create a new, exhilarating sound, part of the path that Beach has been on since 2008’s Blood Courses. A veteran of year-end indie rock round ups beginning with Golden Theft in 2013 and continuing with Gravity/Repulsion, released in 2017, Beach distills the best of those early albums and adds sharpened intent.
At the Memphis-based Goner label, Beach joins an increasingly unique roster of international musicians that reaches far beyond garage or indie rock to encompass artists like gospel singer Rev. John Wilkins, Kentucky rockers Archaeas, New Orleans iconoclasts Quintron and Miss Pussycat, and no-wavers Optic Sink.

DEAD FINKS is New Zealand-born duo Erin Violet and Joseph Thomas playing post-punk music in the tradition of Wire, Sonic Youth and Parquet Courts. Their current incarnation is a 4 piece band based in Berlin.
The band started gaining traction in 2021 when the video for their single “(My Human) Extinction” was premiered on the taste-making Harakiri Diät channel, becoming a modest hit in underground punk circles. They gained further attention after being hand-picked by Detroit post-punk stalwarts Protomartyr to support several dates of their 2022 EU tour, and went on to support Dry Cleaning on the entire European leg of their 2023 world tour.
Their most recent album is 2024’s “Eve of Ascension”, a “prelapsarian nine-track survey of suffering shot through with anxious belligerence, in which paranoid chants ring out with sputtering non-defeat and woozy caterwauling harmonies go toe-to-toe against insistently sclerotic drumming”. It is available now through Urge Records.

NEUKÖLLNER SPEED DATING CLUB started as a solo project based around samplers, drum machines, synthesizers and keyboards, but now performs with a constantly changing line-up of various instruments. The drones, kraut-like repetition and bouncy electronic drums mixed with motoric sampled kits creates a hypnotic and psychedelic feel, mixed with a pinch of things like dub, noise and pop.
Mit Jung kaputt spart Altersheime lieferten Bärchen und die Milchbubis zu Beginn der 80er-Jahre DEN Punk-Slogan der Zeit, „No Future!“, war das Motto. Doch auch über den Punk hinaus verfügte die Band über reichlich Pop-Appeal und agierte an der Schnittstelle zur Neuen Deutschen Welle. Ich will nicht älter werden, hieß es auf ihrem Debütalbum Dann macht es Bumm (1981). Älter geworden sind sie, milde jedoch nicht, denn Anlass zum Wütend-Sein und Feiern gibt es noch immer. Über 40 Jahre später folgt nun mit ihrem zweiten Album also Die Rückkehr des Bumm!
Ende der Siebziger begannen Annette „Bärchen“ Simons und eine Gruppe Teenager-„Milchbubis“, Hannover unsicher zu machen. Von da an war die Band mit ihren humorvoll-subversiven Texten breitflächig vertreten: Von Jugendzentren, Underground-Tapes und nischigen Fanzines über die Bravo bis ins BRD-Fernsehen sowie auf den großen Bühnen des Landes – viele waren dem Bärchen-Charme verfallen. Nach einer LP und einer EP folgte 1983 mit der Label- auch die Bandauflösung und die Gruppe verschwand vorerst von der Bildfläche.
Und jetzt sind sie wieder da, und natürlich auch im Schokoladen Berlin!

ROLANDO BRUNO was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After spending three years in Spain, he returned home to fully pursue his unique musical vision. His current tropical music project began in 2005, while he was still a member of the garage-punk band Los Peyotes. While Los Peyotes followed a classic rock band format, Bruno’s approach to cumbia was born in solitude, using his computer—his "best friend"—to craft backing tracks, humorously dubbing it his “MIDI Orchestra.”
In 2015, Bruno expanded his sound by assembling a full band and reintroducing himself as Rolando Bruno y El Grupo Arévalo, a supergroup of underground musicians from Buenos Aires. The lineup features members of Les Mentettes, Alfonso El Pintor, Los Alamos, Los Peyotes and Pecera.
Cumbia Trash: A Unique Sound & Aesthetic
Their music is rooted in cumbia, but Bruno defines it as "cumbia trash"—a style that blends Peruvian chicha, '80s and '90s Argentine cumbia, psychedelic rock, Afro rhythms, and other global influences. This genre is not only about the sound but also about its distinctive vintage aesthetics and visuals, which characterize the band’s unique identity. Their live shows are an electrifying guarantee of tropical dance madness!

Rolando Bruno has taken his cumbia trash sound worldwide, performing extensively throughout Argentina and neighboring countries. These four musicians breathe new life into the genre in a special way. An American, a Welshman, an Irishman and a German with a clear statement: Punk is not dead! And you know what: neither is ska, for that matter. The band was formed when Jake and Michael decided to try and cover the album “…And Out Come the Wolves,” one of their all-time favourites. They got to about half of it before the duo thought “Hey, in addition to Rancid covers, let’s play some original ska punk rock too, wouldn’t that be fun!” Over a few cold bottles of their favourite drink, they went through hundreds of band names. Most of them were meaningless combinations of words that just sounded good, as many band names are. But the intense “Beer-storming” ultimately led to the goal: Mad Life Crisis. Cheers!

Schließlich spielen Jones Stolze (Bass), Robert Becker (Gitarre), Andreas Hankock (Gitarre, Gesang) und Morten Wienold (Schlagzeug) seit über 30 Jahren immer wieder in verschiedenen Bands zusammen. Als Human Hair People kennen sie den staksigen Funk von Gang Of Four, den musikalischen Stoizismus von „It’s not repetition, it’s discipline“-Mark E. Smith/The Fall (sind dabei aber nicht so schlecht gelaunt), genauso wie sie die komplexere Mathematik und Präzision von Nomeansno um ein paar Ecken weiter denken. Dazwischen zeugt ein so überraschend wie kurz durch den Raum fliegendes Bluesriff von Kenntnis der Historie oder geschmeidige Offbeats lockern die Spannung für einen Moment. Nichts ist sicher in diesem Kontext. Human Hair People kennen ihre Pappenheimer und ihre Pappenheimer lieben sie. Wie Karin Bornefeld von den holländischen Hardcore-Legenden The Ex, die ihrem Support Act HHP begeistert bescheinigte: „ Ganz ähnlich wie wir“. Die norwegische Rockband LÜT meldet sich zurück - lauter, mutiger und lebendiger als je zuvor. Seit mehr als 30 Jahren betreten Rizio und Scheng bewusst die Shadowlands neben unseren Erwartungen. Sie brechen aus bestehenden musikalischen Normen aus und kreieren etwas völlig Neues, Eigenes. Zitate aus dem Punk und Hardcore werden genauso authentisch umgesetzt wie Drum and Bass, Breakbeat, Techno oder Klassikeinflüsse.
Ursprünglich aus der Punkszene stammend wurden GUTS PIE EARSHOT in den 90er Jahren - damals mit fünf Mitgliedern - als Avantgarde-Legende des undogmatischen Hardcore auf unzähligen Festivals und Konzerten gefeiert.
Seit 2004 treten Jean Jacobi, Schlagzeug und Patrick Reerink, E-Cello als Duo auf.
Seitdem spielten die beiden Musiker neben unzähligen Konzerten im deutschsprachigen Raum jährliche Tourneen in Osteuropa und wurden 2005 und 2011 zu Kulturaustauschen nach Klaipeda, Litauen und Murmansk, Russland eingeladen. 2006 spielten sie auf dem Sziget-Festival und seit 1999 sind sie regelmässiger Gast auf dem Fusion-Festival.

What started out as a bunch of separate poems in a shared Google Drive folder, evolved into Wilson A: a Haarlem-based Indie collective that balances between DIY-indie, garage rock and post-punk. Wilson A. makes sharp, ironic anthems about mobile phone addictions, marathon runners and hopeless parties you should have probably already left two hours ago.

I first encountered the Gotobeds in August 2014, at a benefit for the great rock bard Karl Hendricks in their mutual hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Gotobeds went on fashionably (if not voluntarily) late and proceeded to lay waste to anything else anyone tried to do that evening.
I took an abnormal number of photos and was made a fan for life.
This kind of instant affection happens to me, particularly in my jaded dotage, so very rarely that I feel it is worth noting.
Almost inevitably, an attempt to describe an unnameable jolt will devolve into predictable cliches.
I'm talking about old chestnuts like:
Bouncing off the walls
Spending about half an hour in a washing machine full of bolts and rose petals
Having sand thrown in your eyes just before being kissed vigorously on the neck
All of which are a) barely better than nothing on the word front but b) do apply, if lazily so, to the Gotobeds’ various, terrific issuances: on 12XU (to which they have happily returned), their erstwhile label Sub Pop, etc. And the latter two apply perhaps most especially to their terrific new record–Masterclass.
The Gotobeds have an unwavering commitment to bending and breaking things in the process of remaking them into something bolder and better (and, a couple of lineup changes to the contrary, not laying anyone off wantonly from critical government jobs). "Goes Away," to wit, is remarkably fractured, chomping up the minutes, 0% rounded off as is their default setting--do not toy with perfection.
The Gotobeds are aggressive, cannily disjointed, occasionally raw propellent, with an ear for melody that leavens the entire enterprise with a reasonable, non-diabetes-inducing amount of sugar. The lovely-yet-scaly "Mirror Writing" is nearly six minutes long and somehow too short. "Second Sight" doesn't pass for mellow but has guitar lines in the chorus that I'm pretty sure were written by Richard Carpenter on PCP (please fact-check).
All of the guitar playing that comes out of this band is 100% whacked (a wildly positive modifier, not to be confused with its opposite of "wack")...oh what can I say to pique your interest, that you might understand through reference.
Hmmm...how about...Rowland S Howard riding on the shoulders of Lee Ranaldo through a house of mirrors. Hack move on my part. But perhaps it leaves the right taste in your mouth.
The complements to this wrangling and strangling are warm and charming vocals (albeit semi-buried), with perhaps surprising heart and richness to them, plus (crucially) an insistent, melodic bass guitar and beguilingly slushy drumming that together invite that most welcome and rare of rock sense-memory tingles (The Clean).
In closing, I will suggest:
Apprise your ears, brain, and genitalia of this brazen, scabrous, lovingly made record–the Gotobeds’ fourth or fifth depending on how many fingers you have left on your counting hand.
Masterclass was spat out during a low point of recent human history–the Great Plague of 2020-2022–but as we should all know from watching the History Channel, there’s always a sub-sub-basement. And beautiful art, great music, good books–these things are necessary for survival, as well as being prime antidotes to the scourge of psyops-enabled doomscrolling.
If you've access to a better (or even marginally equivalent) ball of punk, surf, no-wave, Beat-adjacent literature (ala John Fante, namechecked herein) and bubblegum, a) I have serious doubts that you are telling the truth, but b) please let us all know because we can surely use it.

low key orchestra. Mehr Understatement in einem Bandnamen geht nicht. Der wirklich unpassendste – und damit passendste – Name wurde da von Sönke Torpus für etwas gefunden, das, ohne übertreiben zu wollen, musikalisch wirklich Großartiges birgt.
Aber erstmal kurz von vorne. low key orchestra ist das neue Bandprojekt des eben genannten. Allen Indie-Folk-Connaisseuren unter uns wird seine ehemalige Band Torpus & the Art Directors ein Begriff bzw. in guter Erinnerung sein und die Freude ins Gesicht geschrieben stehen, dass nun neue Musik vor der Tür der Lieblingslieder steht.
„maybe words“ hieß der erste von mehreren low key orchestra Songs, die dieses Jahr veröffentlicht werden und es ist schlichtweg ein wundervolles Lied. Sönke ist eine kleine Hymne für all jene gelungen, die eine ausgestreckte Hand oder ein offenes Ohr benötigen. Als hätte er sich gedacht: „Wenn ich nicht in deiner Nähe sein kann, dann bekommst du immerhin einen Refrain, der mehr Trost spendet als 1000 Umarmungen.”

Aus jeder Zeile spricht aufrichtiges Mitgefühl. Zusammen mit dem Produzenten Helgi Helgasson hat Sönke es geschafft, einen unausweichbaren Text in warme und facettenreiche Musik zu übersetzen. Soundtechnisch schwebt das low key orchestra – vor allem hierzulande - sehr eigenständig in einer Klang- und Gefühlswelt, die von Bands wie Bright Eyes, Whitney und den Flaming Lips geprägt wurde. Im Songwriting hingegen fnden sich Parallelen zu frühen Alben von Coldplay oder Keane. Sönke sagt über sich selbst, er habe die Musik für eine lange Zeit verloren. Zu unserem Glück hat er sie – oder vielleicht auch sie ihn – wiederentdeckt. Im Oktober geht das low key orchestra zum ersten Mal in voller Bandbesetzung auf Tour.

Meet M.O.R.A., a hardcore band from the darkest pits of Hellsinki, Finland. his mayhem machine fueled by its members love for the sport has managed to create a healthy amount of buzz in the Finnish/European scene and managed to play over 100 energy-ridden shows since 2008. heir style can be described as a mix of old and new school hardcore accompanied with two female vocalists. he original cast came to be in 2008 and played until 2014, ater which their irst singer and bass player started families and decided to retire from music. he current lineup has been active since 2015.Lyric-wise M.O.R.A. dabbles in themes such as substance abuse, depression, poverty and other positive phenomenons of our time. his pondering is not done in a very light hearted fashion as can be expected from a group hailing from one of the most suicidal nations in the world. Although delivering their verbal onslaught in Finnish M.O.R.A. has gained popularity outside Finland which stands proof of their appeal as a live band as well as the strength of their sound in general.M.O.R.A. has published two EPs and played over 100 shows since 2008, including three European tours and a mini tour of the Baltic region. A devotee of the DIY ethic since the beginning, M.O.R.A. is currently in the process of recording a new album which is planned to be released in summer 2017. Naturally touring is also in the plans for this group is all about exporting their unique brand of madness and meeting like minded people in the process.
The queer vegan shitpunks, Joe & The Shitboys, formed with the intention of calling out shitty behaviour in the conservative Faroe Islands, where the rock scene is filled with boneless homophobes and meat-eating misogynists - and continue to take their aim at general vibe killers everywhere.
The live shows are full of energy, with a barrage of songs often under a minute long, like “Save The Planet You Dumb Shit”, "Life Is Great You Suck" and “If You Believe in Eating Meat Start With Your Dog”, being broken up by the flamboyant frontman roasting the audience relentlessly. The band (Joe, Ziggy Shit, Johnny Shit and Ollie Shit) have played every type of venue there is; roof tops, public toilets, opening ceremonies for North Atlantic sub sea tunnels, museums and skateparks, and have also appeared on their fair share of major festival line ups around Europe and North America.
