Fantas Schimun // Würde die Genrebezeichnung “Experimentalpop“ nicht allzu viele diffuse und humorfreie Assoziationen freisetzen, wäre die Musik von Fantas Schimun schon ganz gut angerissen. Die in Wien (und zeitweise in Berlin) ansässige Musikerin produziert seit Jahren Klänge, die nur zu gut die Hoffnungen und Ängste, aber auch die Utopien unserer Zeit abbilden, eine Leistung, die man von zeitgenössischer Popmusik längst nicht mehr erwartet. Sie trägt das Bitter-Süße des Blues oder Jazz durch staubig-heisse Industrial-Hallen mit der Entschlossenheit und Neugier des Punk; es tauchen Jeff Buckley, John Cale, Ma Rainey sowie Big Mama Thornton als Referenz auf, aber eben auch The Fall, The Residents und Negativland.

Fantas Schimun macht alles selbst, genau so, wie sie sich von befreundeten MusikerInnen wie Doc Schoko, Hermann Halb oder Sandra Schulte massiv unterstützen lässt, sie arbeitet ebenso akustisch wie elektronisch; es gibt Klangfetzen und Szenen aus aberwitzigen Parallelwelten, und dann taucht da plötzlich doch wieder ein Song auf, umwerfende Melodien und Stimmungen.

Wer sich auf den Wohlklang einlässt, muss auf dessen Zerstörung gefasst sein, wer sich über Brüche und Verzerrungen freut, könnte von Momenten reiner Schönheit überrumpelt werden, beide Seiten werden lange nachklingen.

Konnte man jahrelang ihre Musik nur in Bruchstücken (etwa auf den ZickZack- Samplern “What´s So Funny About ZickZack“ oder “Bis Auf Weiteres Eine Demonstration“) oder auf seltenen Live- Konzerten erleben, gibt es jetzt (endlich) den angemessenen Einstieg in ihr Universum: ein Doppelalbum, das Ende 2009 auf ZickZack erscheint.

“Variationen über die Freiheit eines Anderen“, so der Titel des ersten Albums, das seit 2002 entstand, überrascht durch Stimme und Stimmungen. Vögel zwitschern, Züge fahren und Stimmen aus dem Jenseits klingen nach. Spannend auch die verwegene Mischung der unterschiedlichsten musikalischen Elemente.

“Der Himmel ist Blau - Ein Alptraum in Stereo“, das aktuell produzierte 2.Album aus 2009, bietet neben einem absurden, fiktionalen Hörspiel mit gepitschten Lindensträßlern auch viel, ganz viel Musik. Ein Hauch Balkan weht etwa durch den bereits auf ZickZack veröffentlichten Song “Eia Weia Weg“. Zwei sitzen in einem “Formel 1“-Auto und tauschen die Rollen, Donald Duck wird zum Beifahrer. Wem das alles zuviel ist, dem sei “Herztropfen“ eine Herz-kurz-vor-Stillstand-Collage, dringend empfohlen!

Martin Tetzlaff // kann man in Berlin ziemlich regelmäßig live erleben. In verschiedenen Indiebands (Paul Is Dead, Phonetic) hat er bereits gespielt. Nach drei EPs bringt er nun seinen ersten Longplayer heraus. Herausgekommen sind elf orchestrale Popsongs. Dieses Kopfkino ließ er in Berlin anschließend noch weitere zwei Jahre reifen und mithilfe von Marco Birkner und Chris Von Rautenkranz (Blumfeld, Franz Ferdinand, Die Sterne, Aeronauten) zur hörenswerten Singer/Songwriter-Platte formen - die ihrerseits eng umschlungen wird von französischem Elektropop und einigen New Wave-Zitaten.

Tetzlaff versteht es wie wenige, eingängige Lieder zu komponieren. Mit "Wolkenschloss" beginnt die authentische Reise in die tanzbare Zweisamkeit: "In die ungewisse Zukunft treiben wir zu zweit / Bist du schon bereit?" Beim Refrain ist man sofort gefangen und trällert ungeniert mit. Martin ist einer von der Sorte, die mit Textzeilen und klaren Gitarren die Welt zu verändern versuchen. Das gelingt ihm auch meistens. Die großen Popnummern hat er einfach drauf, wie "Ein schöner Traum" ebenfalls beweist.

Während sich ein Maximilian Hecker eher in der Melancholie verlieren, schaut Martin Tetzlaff optimistischer ins Leben - schwermütiger Streicher, Sorgen und diverser Angstzustände zum Trotz. Jules Etienne / ist immer schon Musiker gewesen. Seine Karriere fing mit Geigenunterricht in der Pariser Banlieue an. Es kamen mit der Zeit noch viele Instrumente dazu, Virtuosität ist jedoch nie eine Inspiration für ihn gewesen. Es ist eine gewisse Vorstellung von Harmonien, die ihn durch unterschiedliche Genres und Projekte führt, von Minimal House über Psychedelic Krautrock zu Chamber Pop. Es ist kein Widerspruch für Jules Etienne seine erste Veröffentlichung auf einer Kompilation mit Gastr del Sol Mitglied David Grubbs zu haben und danach mit seinem project gui.tar electronic live sets in Clubs wie dem Berghain zu performen. Moderne technologien machen es möglich alle denkbaren Genres zu erforschen, warum sich dann nur auf eine Musikrichtung begrenzen? Jules Etienne ist vor allem eine Band. Yanneck Salvo, als DJ bekannt unter dem Namen Quarion ist an den Tasten, Jules Valeron, Musiker und Photograph spielt die Bassguitare und Jules Etiennes erzählt mit Akustik-Gitarre und Gesang seine nostalgischen Kurzgeschichten. Rhythmus und Harmonien entstehen aus ihrer Verbindung und nicht aus lauten Instrumenten oder Maschinen.

COTTON PONIES // is a three headed type of fluffy horse. It is young. It stems from a very charged scene of noisy garage-y nasty musical formations around the tedious city of Erfurt, by the name of I Love Marbach Records. It likes other beasts such as Ex Models but mostly goes alone. When in action, the pony is fast ahead of it's own step and hops around rhythms as if it doesn't want to step on it. Then breaks and stops, falls apart, screams, squeaks. In the midst, kind little melodies break the fast moving run of itself. Pop is noise is somewhat grunge...in that case doesn't want to be anything at all. The little horse says: "some times I feel like gold but the most I feel like silver". And then hides and comes out here and there to race with it's own pace.

SISSTERS (Bln) // Drums, Guitar and Vocals. Minimized and Happy.

Not necessarily happy, SISSTERS music transports ease. It sounds fragile and emotional but at same time harsh and enraged. SISSTERS play with contradictions. Partly quiet and loud. Ein gelernter Gitarrist am Schlagzeug, ein gelernter Cellist an den Vocals, ein gelernter Pianist an der Gitarre und ein gelernter Bluesist am Bass.

Thursday = Good Music, Good Times

JUSTIN GROUNDS // Nomadic multi-instrumentalist and electro-acoustic visionary" Justin Grounds released his stunning new album 'The Dissolving' last March. Grounds' own life has trodden a path as wildly romantic and unconventional as his music. Born into a family of intellectuals, priests and hippies, his musical education was unorthadox and eclectic; studying baroque violin, foraging ideas from classical sonatas to jazz/funk grooves, touring with a drum'n'bass collective and completing a degree in electro-accoustic composition.

"As my life was drawn into this very organic rhythm, the tides, the fire, the chopping of the wood....in a strange way creatively I started getting drawn into the electronic side of my studio. All the time I was working on this record I was deeply seduced by the idea of combining the sheer purity, almost divine, but cold perfection of the electronic sounds with the fragmented and flawed, yet warm wooden sounds of the string instruments. Somewhere in the joining of these two sides of the spectrum came a profound and hopeful movement."

Driven along by crispy drum'n'bass samples, glitchy analog synth basslines and electro-acoustic textures, the songs took shape with plucked violins and percussive pianos sent through tape delays, small fragments of thumb piano chiming and creating a harmonic structure. On top of all this music the lyrics began to shape themselves, mystical streams of song that made themselves known in the final stages of composition, as if appearing in the mist over the ocean.

DAGOBERT // Herz schmelzend...Sein Leben sollte genauso abenteuerlich werden wie die alten B-Movies, die er so gerne mochte, deshalb entschied sich Dagobert in jungen Jahren, nur noch tolle Sachen zu machen und dabei gut auszusehen. Die skrupellose Umsetzung seines teuflischen Plans führte ihn direkt in die Arme seiner fortan einzigen Verbündeten: den Synthesizern, welche in seinem Falle einer schlechten Rockgruppe gehörten, deren Mitglieder ihn in ihrem heruntergekommenen Proberaum im Untergeschoss eines Industriegebäudes weit draussen in der Provinz leben liessen. Was da in zwei Jahren und vielen kalten, schlaflosen und hungerleidenden Nächten entstand, ist die Musik des Dagobert.

Berauscht von der Wirkung seiner eigenen Erfindung, führte ihn seine Abenteuerlust eines Tages bis ins ferne Berlin, wo er die Liebe entdeckte, deren fatalen Auswirkungen auf das Leben er seither mit intimer Passion in seinen Liedern ausleuchtet.

Die meisten seiner Tage verlebt Dagobert allerdings abgeschieden in den Bergen, in seiner eigenen Welt ohne Zeit.

AVITAL

Besides being a singer-songwriter, Avital Raz is also a highly trained and active performer of both Western Early music and Indian classical music. She was recently introduced, on "the voice of music" radio, during a live performance, as one of the most interesting and versatile artists active in Israel today. Avital's lyrics are daring and eccentric. Her unique composing and singing styles blend the diverse musical traditions she studied rigorously.

Mijo Biscan is co-founder and a song writer for Melbourne’s Alt-Rock-Prog-Folk group called Lamplight. Their success in their homeland of Australia has propelled Mijo to Europe to continue spreading his music to fans on the other side of the planet. Although references are made to Jeff Buckley, Rufas Wainwright, Nick Cave, Fleet Foxes and Leonard Cohen among others, Mijo continues to elude the pigeon-holes of critics with his fiercely unique voice in the world of song writing and also with his own personal expression and musical inventiveness.
Previously performing and commanding a band of up to 18 people including horn sections, strings and choirs, Mijo is now returning to his roots as a troubadour of simple song and simple truths told with his unique voice and way.

MENFOLK is a four piece based in Copenhagen, Denmark. They first appeared in the mid 90\'92s as a noisy three piece called Prune. Since 2000, Menfolk has been a quartet consisting of a drummer, a guitarist and two bass players. The outcome of this unorthodox line-up is a highly unique brand of rock.
Complexity, noise and nerve lay the foundation of this music, which does not let itself be confined by the limitations of conventional rock. It's an anarchic take on the sound of rock when set free from all constraints.

OBSTACLES is an instrumental rock quartet playing complex rock music with an incredible energy. Drums, bass, guitar and keys might be a classic instrumentation but Obstacles sounds nothing like classic rock. This is unpredictable, challenging and catchy as hell.

TRUST is a two-piece formed in late 2008 - Guitar and drums meshed together in complex melody-lines and blistering heaviness to form an all out sonic assault on the hearing apparatus of the listener. Der französische Singer-Songwriter mit dem Pseudonym Shélhôm und der allgäuer Schlagzeuger und Percussionist Jochen Eberle lernten sich im Oktober 2008 kennen und harmonierten bei einigen anfänglichen Improvisations-Sessions derart, dass sie bereits einen Monat später die Band Two Wooden Stones gründeten. Das Repertoire beinhaltet neben eigenen Texten des Sängers und Gitarristen Shélhôm auch Vertonungen der Werke berühmter englischsprachiger Poeten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts wie William Blake, Edgar Allan Poe und Christina Rossetti. Im Mai 2009 erweiterte sich daraufhin die Band um den italienischen Kontrabassisten Matteo Roggero. Er brachte seinen bunten und jazzigen Touch in die Kompositionen mit ein. Als eine multinationale Band möchten Two Wooden Stones vielfältige musikalische Schat- tierungen auf die Bühne bringen. Sie jonglieren mit verschiedensten Stilrichtungen, von traditioneller Musik, über Blues bis hin zum amerikanischen Folk, und produzieren dabei einen einzigartigen Mix.

Unsere ausschließlich selbst komponierten Stücke, beschwören eben so mühelos den Geist von Jimi Hendrix und Jim Morrison, wie sie die Größe der Guns n' Rose wieder erstehen lassen. Der Bass(Wölfchen) fand sich nach kurzer Zeit, wir nutzten die Wartezeit auf einen charismatischen Frontmann und machten einen Song nach dem andern.
So konnten wir schon auf ein außergewöhnliches Repertoire zurückgreifen als Chris zu uns stieß. Anderseits ergaben sich neue fantastische Möglichkeiten, so das wir inzwischen an unserem 50zigsten Stück arbeiten.
Unsere Musik ist kraftvoll und ehrlich, wobei wir uns nicht gewissen Einflüssen entziehen können und wollen. Als da wären: Jimi Hendriks, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, Deep Purple, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Tool, Motörhead, Metallica. The group is expected to perform live and in various constellations . Their high energy rock and roll improvisation sound is inspiring .
